Current thesis concept
Manic depression, also known as Bipolar disorder is one of the most common seen mental illness in our society. People use the word “bipolar” all the time with all kinds of diverse meaning in it. In most of the cases the word is used as a negative label of a person’s behavior or personality. However, the society appears to ignore the fact that there are millions of people who are actually suffering from the clinical disorder and being discriminated and labeled as “crazy”, “having weaker wills” because of the weak understandings and omnipresent prejudices toward this issue. The common misusing of the word “bipolar” is one subtle example of all the discriminations bipolar patients facing nowadays.
When it comes to understand the real syndromes and problems the word “bipolar” represents, very few people have correct basic understandings. I believe the lack of interest to understand this issue generate discriminating behaviors and rigid attitude around our society and make lives of people, who suffer from bipolar syndromes, even more difficult to cope with.
As “mental” illness, bipolar disorder is not as visually recognizable as physical disability. My thesis is about provoking people’s attitude toward how people who have bipolar disorder being treated in our society. By putting the omnipresent social issue into a narrative context, I wish to show my target audience how ignorant and inconsiderate of some taken for granted behaviors are when it comes to attitudes toward bipolar patients. Also I want to make the “invisible”, ”non-visually obvious” situations and difficulties bipolar patients are struggling with more visually clear.
By utilizing the compelling visual language of animation, I hope to bring attention to this issue and make the situations bipolar patients are coping with more comprehensive to the general public in order to help eliminating stigma toward bipolar.
Precedent research/analysis
What precedent works are most related to your current experimentation?
Consider the fact that the issue is in the category of mass communication and bringing public awareness/attention, pieces of currently existed PSA (public service advertising) would be the main source of my precedents. It would be beneficial for me to see how other public issues, especially those involve with certain group of people who suffer from certain conditions, were being operated to gain attention or understandings, even supports from the society.
